This is the commonest bird of prey along the Borneo coast. Also found far inland up rivers and over interior padi fields.

I was unable to take a clear shot of this bird as I was not able to find him in my lens while its flying. On Christmas day, this bird show up at the shore outside Sutera harbor Resort searching for fish, it was havering above the for sometime. At that time, the tide is just coming in, and the shore is with shallow water, I think that gives the bird a good opportunity to hunt for fresh fish. This give me the opportunity to find it in my lens and taken some shots. These posted shots are of better clarity.

Notice when the bird is havering in the sky,  it uses one side of its eye to spot the prey.  It was observed trying to steal the fish from Egret’s mouth.

Great Egret Ardea alba, or Great White Heron or Eastern Great Egret is common migrant and local resident in Kota Kinaabalu. They can be seen in flocks feeding at paddy field, river bank, seashore or they can be event seen in front of your house occasionally.

What is not common is this Great Egret is at the breeding plumage, i.e. the all black legs turned pink, and the color at its face area turned light blue.  This bird was taken at the lagoons during low tide, and it flew and landed at about 50m away from us.  This full body picture by filling the whole frame. Out of the flock of over 100 of them in the lagoon, it really stand out of the group.

Following is another version of it at non-breeding plumage.
